BALTIMORE, Md. (August 24, 2000)- Stemming from a win on the fresh blue waters of St. Clair, Mich., the CITGO-SUPERGARD Offshore Racing Team is prepared to do battle on the salt waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Much to the competitions chagrin the team has a mixed bag of experience in tow.
Team captain and throttleman Nigel Hook has seen the Baltimore Inner Harbor from a different angle than most. Last year Hook served as a commentator for CBS’s live broadcast of the Saturday race, as he called the action from a helicopter. This gave him an opportunity to evaluate the course from above an entirely different perspective. Will it give the team the advantage they need to out duel the competition?
"This year we come into Baltimore as a favorite having proved our mettle in St. Clair," explained Hook. "We have a set up we are confident will work and out perform the competition."
Driver Steve David will have to face tight turns as he did in St. Clair. However the record holding driver may step up to the challenge, as he handled tight turns fighting the strong current with ease as the team captured their first win of the season. He is no stranger to the waters of the Chesapeake.
"We are second in points and very close to overtaking the number one spot. I've raced all over Maryland in Essex, Cambridge, Havre DeGrace, and Kent Island. Thankfully, I've won at all those sights. I've won the Maryland Governors Cup three times and have established competition world records at the Essex Maryland site. Essex was also the sight where I won a World Championship. My history in Maryland has been a pleasant one, winning in 1 Litre stock hydro, 1 Litre mod. hydro, 2.5 Litre stock hydro, 2.5 Litre modified hydro, 6 Litre, 7 Litre and Jersey Speed Skiff."
Team experience combined with momentum is going to be the key to the success of the CITGO-SUPERGARD Offshore Racing Team.
"The momentum of the win in Michigan will have us pumped up," said Tony Wiese. "
Navigator Tony Wiese’s game plan is to ‘race smart and to the finish’. As in St. Clair, due to the tight turns and a narrow course the team cannot let their guard down, so there will be no rest for the CITGO-SUPERGARD Offshore Racing team. "The Baltimore Inner Harbor is notorious for destroying equipment. Historically there has been a considerable amount of debris is the water, which can tear drives and damage the boats. We will be a serious contender if we steer clear of debris."
The American PowerBoat Association Chesapeake Challenge showdown will take place on Sunday, August 27, at 1:00 p.m. EST. Speedvision will air the race on October 4, 2000 at 2:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. EST.
