Suzuki GSX R European Cup
Round 1, Valencia, Spain
Sunday 24th April
A DAY TO FORGET FOR XAVI.
The first round of the Suzuki GSX-R750 European Cup will not be one that Xavier Simeon will remember with any affection. He had qualified superbly in fourth place yesterday and was on the front row of the grid, alongside pole-setter Carmelo Morales, 'wild card' Fernandez Oriol and David Salon. Morales made a good start and led at the end of lap one, chased by Fouloy, Salon, Kennaugh and then Simeon. But one lap later, he overshot turn one and by the time he rejoined the track, he was dead last - in 26th place! He charged up the field and into sixteenth, but then had to go straight on again at turn one and this time dropped to 22nd. Now Xavier was running out of laps and by the time the 12-lap race was over, he had managed to get into 18th position. His problem both times had been front-tyre related and that caused a lack of grip.
Up at the front end of the race, Salon took the chequered flag, with Kennaugh second, Fouloy third and Morales fourth.
Xavier Simeon - 18th
I am so disappointed today, because I should've done so much better. I had done the hard work in qualifying and was on the front row of the grid. My start was OK, but after a few laps I had a big traction problem. I couldn't get any feel for what the tyres were doing and I overshot turn one because otherwise I would have crashed. I rejoined the race in last position and was going well until I was forced to go straight on at turn one again! This time I could only get up to eighteenth because there weren't enough laps left for me to get into the points. I hope I have better luck in the next round.
