In his first competitive outing since retiring from MotoGP at the end of 2012, the Australian was a victim of his Honda’s throttle becoming stuck open, being thrown violently off the bike approaching the hairpin.
The crash came shortly after Stoner had assumed the lead of the race for the defending champion HARC-Pro team, which was seeking its third successive Suzuka 8 Hours win along with Stoner’s teammates Takumi Takahashi and Michael van der Mark.
Stoner later revealed on social media that he had sustained a broken scapula and a fractured tibia as a result of the incident.
With over half the race complete, the factory Yamaha of Bradley Smith, Pol Espargaro and Katsuyuki Nakasuga currently leads, having started the race from pole position.
