Trickle and Cobb dominate NASCAR Sunbelt Region
LAS VEGAS - Las Vegans Dick Cobb and Chuck Trickle have taken their battle for Las Vegas Motor Speedway's track championship to the national level.
Cobb leads Trickle by a mere eight points in the battle for The Bullring at LVMS' track championship in the NASCAR Late Model Division, but the two local racing veterans also are dominating the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Sunbelt Region standings.
Cobb, who has two victories this year, commands the top position of the prestigious regional rankings with a Competition Performance Index of .7750. The index is used to rank the track leaders in each of the 10 regions across the country.
Ironically, Trickle, who has four wins this season, has the same CPI as Cobb but ranks in the 11th position of the regional chart. To add to the confusion, Robert Barker, a competitor at San Antonio (Texas) Speedway, holds the second-place position in the region with a CPI of only .7158.
This occurred because the system used to rank the regional standings requires the top 10 competitors to be leading their track point standings. Since Trickle is second in the track point standings, he is unable to claim the tie for the top spot.
"This is a very unique situation. It says a lot for the talent we have racing each week at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway," said David Stetzer, director of short-track events. "The battle between Cobb and Trickle is intensifying each week. It is exciting to know that two of our drivers have a chance to represent The Bullring at the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series banquet in Orlando."
The Sunbelt Region is comprised of speedways in Florida, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada.
Fans get chance to win cruise or motorcycles
In conjunction with NASCAR, Las Vegas Motor Speedway will give away a cruise for four on The Big Red Boat. Anyone attending an event at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway between now and Sept. 9 may register to win the cruise. The drawing will be held on Sept. 9.
Two Honda motorcycles will be given away at The Bullring on Sept. 23 during the Star Nursery 250 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series race. The contest, which is similar to Winston's No Bull 5 promotion, will match contestants with drivers in the race. The fan who has the winning driver wins the motorcycles.
