MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - John Mancuso made a valiant effort in Easyriders Top Fuel World Championship at Calder Park Raceway Melbourne, Australia, but fell one round short of the final round. The veteran Harley-Davidson dealer dropped a tough decision opposite eventual winner Jim McClure.
Mancuso feels fortunate for what he accomplished in the first leg of the three-race series in Australia.
"We were one round away from the finals in competing against the best Top Fuel Harley riders in the World," explained Mancuso. "That has to account for something. Naturally, we wanted to win. But, we're satisfied for now. We'll give it our best shot at the next one."
After qualifying well, Mancuso stepped up in the first round and defeated Australian Steve Little. Little was the quicker of the two off of the line, but the former IHRA and ADBA Nitro Harley World Champion stormed by for a 7.084/196.24. Little lost with a 7.81/165.68.
In the second round, Mancuso continued his bid to win the first leg of the three race series by stopping Canadian Warren Hill in the second round. Hill never stood a chance as Mancuso nabbed a .061 starting line advantage and blistered the Aussie racing surface with a 6.915/202.20 lap. The losing run for Hill was an off-pace 8.021/149.37.
With the field narrowed to four bikes, Mancuso was paired against fellow American McClure in a match that would certainly bring those in the States to their feet. McClure was not to be denied as the defending IHRA Northern Nationals titlist made an easy go of it as Mancuso had problems with his ride and was forced to abort the run. McClure scored the final round berth with a 7.474/168.71, while Mancuso lifted and coasted with a troubled 9.852/100.40.
The next stop on this "Invitation Only" Easyriders Top Fuel Harley World Series will take place next Saturday, February 5th, at Willowbank Raceway in Brisbane, Australia.
