Buyten Now Achieving Success After an Injury Plagued Career

AURORA, Ill. (April 2, 2004) - The first half of the 2004 IFMA Freestyle Motocross Presented by XM Satellite Radio season came to a close this past weekend as 2001 IFMA Champion Dustin Miller and 2003 IFMA Co-Rookie of the Year Matt Buyten split wins in Milwaukee, Wis. Buyten can relax in the off season with the overall IFMA points lead heading into the summer/fall season. Buyten and Beau Bamburg both with 10 wins in the first half of the season are set for a showdown when the second half of the season starts back in August.

Buyten first stepped onto the IFMA scene in January of 2001 at an event in Denver, Colo., where during the competition he sustained a back injury. Buyten was out of competition until the Phoenix round of competition in August of 2001. Buyten completed the Phoenix event, finishing ninth and 12th on Friday and Saturday respectively. October 2001 in Fresno, Calif., was next for Buyten where he took a sixth and seventh place finish on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Injuries continued in November 2001, while competing at a Regional Arenacross event in Reno, Nev. Buyten was injured in the freestyle jump-off competition. After recovering and traveling with a tour throughout the summer, Buyten returned to the IFMA in October 2002 in Fresno. Buyten competed in the 2002 IFMA season finale in Kansas City, then continued to ride the 2003 season where he finished third overall with two wins, fourth in the Vans Triple Crown points standings and became 2003 IFMA Co-Rookie of the year with Myles Richmond.

"I am pretty stoked to be riding my dirt bike for a living, I never thought I would get this far. If I can hold on for the point's championship it would be a bonus, everything from here on out is a bonus. I am just happy to be riding my dirt bike," Buyten said about he IFMA points lead.
