LA CANADA, Calif. (July 27, 2001) - The Engine Ice 125cc Amateur's Cup is a new addition to the 2001 THQ U.S. Open, The World's Richest Motorcycle Race, intended to showcase the talent of the most skilled amateur riders on the brink of professional careers.
Six manufacturers, KTM, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, Husqvarna, and Suzuki, will select two amateur riders to represent them under the lights at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Oct. 12-14, as they compete aboard two-stroke 125cc motorcycles. The rules state that all selected riders must be at least 15 years of age and not older than 17 years of age as of the date of the race. Additionally, no rider selected could have previously entered a professional AMA or FIM supercross event (Outdoor Nationals are an approved exception).
Each invited entry will be treated just as the Pros are that race the THQ U.S. Open, providing them an opportunity to see what it's like to race in the "big leagues". Qualified amateur riders that are interested in participating in the event need to contact their manufacturers representative for more information on how to be one of the selected riders.
"This is an event where the manufacturers place a bet on the future of the sport," said Dave Kimmey, President of Cycle Logic Products. "Since we launched Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant a little over a year ago, we have always been involved in the amateur programs. It's important to support the stars of tomorrow."
