Hobbs Closes Gap at Rainy Brands Hatch
Hobbs Racing rider Dennis Hobbs celebrated his 22nd birthday in style by closing the gap on THINK! British Superbike Cup leader James Ellison at a damp and miserable Brands Hatch on Sunday.
Aboard his Scott Leathers sponsored 1000cc Suzuki, the 22 year old from Guisborough got back amongst the silverware with a second place in the day's first race followed by a fourth place in leg two around the full GP track as he moved to within 28 points of Cumbrian Ellison at the half way stage in the series.
Saturday's glorious qualifying weather had seen the Cleveland rider secure a fifth row grid position but rain on race day meant it was going to be a battle and indeed, Hobbs nearly crashed as his 160bhp machine slewed sideways at the start of the opening twenty lapper.
Once he had dispensed with some slower riders, Hobbs clawed his way up to second in class at the flag with his cause being aided by Ellison only finishing in fifth. A similar pattern followed in race two as he became one of the fastest riders on the track in the latter stages but had to settle for fourth place at the chequered flag as conditions deteriorated.
"It was very difficult to race in those conditions although I've known it to be worse and I'm just pleased to pull some points back on James this weekend" said Hobbs who is 20 points clear of third placed rider Jon Kirkham going into the next round at Knockhill in Scotland in a couple of weeks time.
Hobbs and Ellison renew their battle this weekend at Croft whereby Dennis aims to clinch the Ken Redfern Trophy for a record fourth successive year at the North Yorkshire track.
