Amateur Arenacross World Finals return to 2002 THQ U.S. Open.
LAS VEGAS (September 5, 2002) - This year's THQ U.S. Open sponsored by Thor/Parts Unlimited, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, welcomes back the Amateur Arenacross World Finals for the second year in a row. The Amateur Arenacross World Finals takes place on Sunday, October 13, the day after the 2002 THQ U.S. Open champion is crowned.
The Amateur Arenacross World Finals gives the world's top amateur motocross racers the opportunity to compete in one of the world's most luxurious venues and on the same track as the likes of Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael and more. Qualifying for the finals began in November of 2001 at the National and Regional Arenacross Series and continued through March of 2002. Riders from Canada and the U.S. competed in one of six regions with the top three qualifiers from each region in 16 classes qualifying to have the opportunity to race for a "world championship."
The strength of this event in its first season made it a mainstay at the THQ U.S. Open. Additionally, the immense economic impact from bringing friends and families of the riders from these 37 states and eight Canadian Provinces to the Las Vegas community is reaping some astounding support.
"From the success of the event last year, the excitement has been building all year for these riders," said Mike Kidd, vice president of arenacross. "All 288 riders have worked hard to earn this opportunity knowing the competition will be tough. It is exciting to watch all the youth and amateur riders racing for such great honors."
