Van der Merwe sets Snetterton Friday fast time

Championship leader Alan van der Merwe set the fastest time at a warm and sunny Snetterton circuit in Suffolk. The test session was extremely competitive and, despite numerous stoppages for red flags, most drivers attempted a qualifying-style lap and eventually the top 20 drivers were covered by just 1.1 seconds.

The track warmed up throughout the session and most of the fastest times were set towards the end of the morning. Several drivers spun, including Rizal Ramli, Fairuz Fauzy and Tor Graves, who all left the circuit at the exit of Russell Bend at various times. Michael Keohane crashed at the exit of the Bomb Hole causing substantial damage to the front-right of his car and he was unable to continue in the session.

Van der Merwe ended up fastest, closely followed by Richard Antinucci in second and Robert Dahlgren. Rob Austin, second in the championship, finished fourth ahead of Jamie Green in fifth.

Nelson Piquet Jnr, under the watchful eye of his father, former Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet, was only able to complete a handful of laps and ended up 13th.

The race meeting will take place at Snetterton this weekend, with the two races scheduled to take place at 11:10am and 2:30pm on Easter Sunday.
