Alan van der Merwe qualified in pole position for round three of the British Formula Three Championship. Conditions were cold and windy at Snetterton circuit as the Championship class field went out for the 20 minute session early in the morning.
Van der Merwe, who currently leads the championship after two rounds, was the only driver to go under 1m 02s and he consolidated his position at the top of the sheets with a 1m 01.845s time on his penultimate lap.
Nelson Piquet Jnr qualified in second place after consistently improving his times throughout his 19-lap run, breaking into the low 1m 02s towards the end of the session and eventually qualifying just 0.23 seconds behind van der Merwe.
Richard Antinucci finished third after an eventful start to the session -- the American driver had to pull into the pits after a slow first lap to change some settings on his car. He rejoined and was lapping competitively within ten laps.
Ronnie Bremer briefly went ahead by 0.004 seconds but Antinucci responded to take third at the end of the session.
The race will take place at 11:10am on Sunday 20th April and qualifying for round four will take place this afternoon (Saturday 19th April) at 14:20am.
