Hinckley driver Robbie Kerr moved several steps closer to clinching the prestigious British Formula 3 championship at the ultra fast Thruxton circuit yesterday. Kerr kept his head through two fraught races punctuated by safety cars and race stoppages to take home a bagful of points from his 3rd and 4th places in the two races, crucially scoring more points than his only championship rival, Australian James Courtney, and increasing his championship lead to 33 points overall.

With a maximum of 42 points that can be scored at next weekends final two races at Donington Park, Robbie only needs to score one fourth place in either race to guarantee his title (and this is assuming that Courtney scores the maximum available points).

The British Formula 3 championship is a traditional stepping stone to Formula 1 glory, with a high percentage of the current Formula 1 grid having competed in Britain, and many F1 team bosses are closely watching Robbies successes.

Results:
Race 1 1st Heiki Kovaleinen (Fin), 2nd Michael Keohane (Irl), 3rd Stefan De Groot (Bel), 4th Robbie Kerr,(did not finish James Courtney (Aus))

Race 2 1st Heiki Kavaleinen (Fin), 2nd Bruce Jouanny (Fr), 3rd Robbie

Kerr (GB), 4th James Courtney (Aus)

Championship Positions: 1st Robbie Kerr (282), 2nd James Courtney (249), 3rd Heiki Kovaleinen (221), 4th Bruce Jouanny (213). Ends
