Jelley Pips Engel to Pole
Stephen Jelley (#1 Raikkonen Robertson Racing) scored his second pole position of the season in qualifying for Round 13 of the 2007 Lloyds TSB Insurance British F3 International Series, two tenths of a second ahead of Free Practice pace setter Maro Engel (#23 Carlin Motorsport) with a time of 2m14.076, the fastest lap of the weekend so far.
Sam Bird (#3 Carlin Motorsport) was the top rookie and will head up row 2 with Atte Mustonen (#26 Raikkonen Robertson Racing), with the Finn holding to top spot early in the 30-minute session.
Marko Asmer (#7 Hitech Racing) will start tomorrows race in 29th place after the team battled against time to get the Estonian's damaged Dallara repaired, completing the work in just 90-minutes, so he could take part in qualifying. Asmer got onto the track but was only able to complete one flying lap before the chequered flag came out to end the session.
Stephen Jelley: "Yes that was very good! Spa is one of the most challenging circuits that we go to and is one of the circuits that everyone rates as one of the best in the world so to get pole position is pretty mega really. The conditions were kind of ideal because the sun wasn't out and it was better for the tyres and the engine. The race is at a similar time tomorrow and we're looking pretty good."
Sergio Perez (#31 T Sport) continued his earlier pace to claim his 5th National Class pole of 2007, 0.330 seconds and three places ahead of title rival 'Frankie' Cheng.
Sergio Perez: "I'm pleased but Spa is one of the tracks where it doesn't matter as much to get pole position. It is going to be a hard race and I'm going to concentrate on that and the second qualifying tomorrow."
Qualifying for Round 14 takes place tomorrow at 13:15 local time, with Round 13 at 18:35 tomorrow evening.
