British F3 at Spa Fogged Out
This weekend, April 16 and 17, 2005, both races of the British Formula 3 International Series at the magnificent Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium were cancelled due to heavy fog. Kimball qualified 6th for the first race while struggling with car handling problems but achieved a very impressive 3rd in a rain drenched qualifying for the second race.
After the second qualifying, a thick fog descended on the circuit forcing the organizers to cancel the race because marshals were unable to see between safety posts. On Sunday morning when Race Two was scheduled, conditions had worsened and once again the race was cancelled. The organizers will reschedule the races at a later date.
Race Two was due to be especially exciting because the top three qualifiers were covered by less that half a tenth of a second in a two and a half minute lap. "Qualifying for Race Two was really fun. The conditions were different each lap but I kept putting in faster laps," said the young American. "I held pole for most of the session and was just pipped by Steven Kane and Ryan Lewis because they were the last guys over the timing line."
Kimball commented on the cancellations, "I am extremely disappointed, I was really looking forward to showing my race-craft at such a challenging circuit. I do however understand the organizers' position when it comes to safety and I am sure they will reschedule the races at a reasonably comparable circuit although nothing could be awesome as racing at Spa!"
Kimball will race again in three weeks at Croft, in northern England, May 6-8, 2005. In the meantime he will continue his testing program and physical training.
