CONWAY WINS 2006 BRITISH F3 CHAMPIONSHIP IN DOMINANT STYLE
Silverstone, UK-24/09/06: Mike Conway is the 2006 British Formula 3 Champion. The Raikkonen Robertson Racing driver had an impeccable weekend at Silverstone's International circuit, sealing the title after the first race today.
"Two poles, two wins, two fastest laps-and to win the championship as well is fantastic. That's the way I wanted to finish it and I'm very happy I've done it," said the Kent man, who joins the elite ranks of winners of the extremely prestigious title.
The 23-year-old showed why he is the best in the field by taking his Mercedes-powered Dallara to his 10th victory of the year, becoming the first British driver since 2002 to claim the illustrious prize.
Team Principal Anthony 'Boyo' Hieatt was thrilled with the result: "We're a new team and Mike's done everything we've asked him for. Fifty percent races wins, a perfect weekend - a champion with style," he said.
"Mike was the only driver we chased this year, he was the team leader; he's brought the drivers up to near his level. He's a great champion, thoroughly deserved; it means a massive amount for the team: it's what everyone's worked for, everyone's happy."
In front of a euphoric crowd, an ecstatic Conway said: "It's fantastic; it's a really great series, this is what I've wanted all year. Thank you to all my team, sponsors, family and management and all of my supporters for being part of this, it's an amazing feeling to achieve this goal together."
Conway races in the two final rounds of the season next weekend at Thruxton circuit in Hampshire.
