Cheng Cong Fu at Silverstone
Following the valuable experience gained at the Zolder F3 Masters event, Cheng Cong Fu participated in the 8th round of the F3 UK Series at the Silverstone national circuit. This event resulted in mixed fortunes for Cheng Cong Fu; he qualified 2nd in both sessions, just behind championship leader Perez, and race one saw him make a dynamic start that rocketed him past Perez, who had started four positions ahead.
Unfortunately, three laps into the race, a safety car session bunched up the field, and a mistake on the ensuing restart cost Cheng Cong Fu several positions. Pushing hard to close the gap once again, Cheng Cong Fu was in the process of attacking the leaders when a puncture forced him to dash in the pits for new rubber, regulating him to 5th at the chequered flag.
Race two proved to be more uneventful for Cheng Cong Fu, and he had a steady run to finish second, just a few hundredths of a second off the lap record for national class cars. This was due to the team's ability to solve an initial handling problem, sorting the car out by race two, and also by a determined drive by Cheng Cong Fu.
In spite of results that many other drivers would have loved to achieve, Cheng Cong Fu was not totally happy with his weekend. "It was not a good weekend for me; I have lost important points in the championship. After a great start, I was well in front of all the national class cars, but unfortunately, a misunderstanding with the safety car restart made me lose important positions. I quickly rejoined the lead group, and only a right front tire puncture prevented a certain second place position."
"We worked hard to set the car up for what can be a difficult track, and after the initial problems, we found a good compromise that allowed me to get the most out of the car. I am confident of my driving because in the race, I am able to set a good pace. I just need to improve my single lap qualifying efforts."
Regarding his championship hopes, Cheng Cong Fu commented that, " Now the championship lead is further away than before, but I do not intend to give up. I will continue to give it my best to win the championship."
Cheng Cong Fu's next race is the Thruxton round at the end of August.
