CONWAY ON BRINK OF CHAMPIONSHIP WITH STARRING DRIVE IN MUGELLO
Mugello (ITA) - 17/09/06: Mike Conway (Sevenoaks, Kent) again extended his lead in the British F3 series with a third in race two at the Tuscan circuit of Mugello today.
But it was an incident following his phenomenal start from the second row in race one that was the talking point of the weekend: Conway was one of four drivers heading wheel-to-wheel towards the first corner, but he was forced off the track as the inside driver spun across his path.
Conway`s recovery drive to sixth drew accolades from his Raikkonen Robertson Racing engineer James Robinson: "Excellent start for race one. Mike positioned himself very well to come out ahead to turn one. Unfortunately it was not to happen and he was forced into the gravel.
He did an excellent job of keeping the car running across the gravel to recover in 14th position and fought his way up very quickly - P12 by the time he came past me on the first lap - and then slowly took away positions lap by lap.
It was an exceptionally good drive: similar to Spa, where he had a similar incident, again not his fault, but it`s these championship drives that shine through and obviously it's the only sort of overtaking we`ve seen this weekend at Mugello."
Race two, where Conway started from fourth, gave his podium for the weekend: "In the second race my start was good, I slotted into third and stayed there to score another podium. It`s a shame what happened in the first race but things happen and at least we got back on and scored some good points. We`ve increased our lead in the championship and it would be great to wrap it up in Silverstone."
The penultimate weekend of the British F3 International Series is this Saturday and Sunday on the Silverstone International Circuit in Northamptonshire.
