SALVADOR DURAN GRABS POLE AT MONDELLO PARK
NAAS, Ireland (September 17, 2005).- Talented Mexican driver Salvador Duran finished today's British Formula 3 Class National qualifying session as the fastest chap with a best lap time of 1'32.833 at the 3.502-Km. length Mondello Park circuit. "Chava" was eighth in the overall charts and was the only National Class driver among the top 12 in the overall rankings.
Second fastest of National Class was Alan Docking Racing's Jonathan Kennard with a lap of 1'33.478, third place went to Charlie Hollings, driver for Promatecme F3.
"I feel we have a good car, I don't know the track as good as Hollings or Mawer, and however, we are fastest. As usually, the most important thing is finishing races and of course, in first place if possible," Telmex driver said. "Now I think more about the championship. [Mondello Park] is a very small track and the race results will depend a lot on the position you qualify because it is almost impossible to pass here. Because of that, today was a super important day. The team has put all their trust in me and I don't want to disappoint them. They want to leave Ireland with the championship in their hands and celebrate. I will do my best to achieve it."
During three practice sessions held on Friday, Duran was fastest, while his rival for the title Barton Mawer was third to Charlie Hollings. "On Saturday, during qualifying 1, I was hit by Barton Mawer on the way down of Turn 8. The car was not damaged but I was unable to rejoin the track, I have got stuck in the sand trap," Duran said and added "They beat us by thousandths of a second in first qualifying session, but we were able to regain first place in last session."
Charlie Hollings was first in Qualifying 1 with a best lap time of 1'33.161, followed by Duran (1'33.229), and Jonathan Kennard rounded out the top 3.
"I think a lot on my sponsors [Telmex, Corona, Sun, AMD, Ericsson, Inter Proteccion, SPEED, Pole Position and Prodigy Infinitum], I hope to have good news for them soon and celebrate with when I go back Mexico," he said.
Telmex Racing driver is the current British Formula 3 National Class leader with 255 points, leading Barton Mawer (224), and both two drivers are the only contenders left for the title battle with two race meetings left to run: at Mondello Park International circuit (Rounds 19 & 20), and at Silverstone International circuit, in England (Rounds 21 & 22).
British Formula 3 Championship Class Promatecme F3 Team driver Steve Kane was first in both two qualifying sessions and claimed his third pole position of the season with a time of 1'31.955, while Duran's P1 Motorsports team-mate Danilo Dirani (Class C) was second, 0.188 thousandths of a second behind him. Newly crowned 2005 Class C champion Alvaro Parente was third, 0.226 thousandths of a second away from pole.
