CONWAY CONTINUES F3 LEAD WITH A PAIR OF PODIUMS AT MONDELLO
Mondello Park-25 June 2006: Two Mondello Park podiums to Mike Conway keep the Sevenoaks driver in the lead of the British Formula 3 International Series following rounds seven and eight in Ireland on Sunday. Starting third in both races after unpredictable track conditions in Saturday's qualifying, Conway finished second in race one and third in race two to record his fifth consecutive podium.
Conway sized up the results positively: "Qualifying threw up its challenges with traffic and on-off rain so qualifying third was okay, but not what we predicted after running more than half a second faster in testing on Thursday and Friday. But two podiums are not too bad a weekend and I'm happy to have pulled second in the earlier race."
The Raikkonen Robertson driver set up the second place with a storming start as his Double R Racing team closed out the podium with all top three spots in race one. "In the green flag lap I laid a lot of rubber down and made a really good start and got in front of [team-mate] Stephen [Jelley] before he could come across into the first corner," Conway said.
He closed on race leader and team-mate Bruno Senna by just over one tenth of a second in the penultimate lap of the 18-lap race. "I sat right behind Bruno for first two laps before he pulled a little gap. I pushed hard and got close a couple of times but Mondello is not set up for overtaking. So we did we needed to do: get a good start and some good points and it's great for the team to take the top three places," he commented.
The second race was mostly a processional affair for the front runners: Conway driving to third with the win going to the Honda-powered Carlin team for the first time this year, followed by a Hitech Racing car.
The next rounds of the series are in Snetterton, Norfolk on the 15th and 16th July.
