Jamie Green qualified in pole position for the first round of the British Formula Three Championship at Donington Park. Green, the reigning McLaren Autosport Young Driver and also runner-up in the 2002 Formula Renault Championship, put his Carlin Motorsport car at the top of the times on his 17th lap and remained there for the rest of the session.

Green had to work hard for his pole though. Danny Watts set his fastest lap early in the session with a time that eventually would put him in tenth place and Ronnie Bremer was consistently fastest in the early laps.

However Green, whose fastest laps had been in the low 1m 06s range, managed to pull out a 1m 04.167s lap and moved to the top of the timesheets, ahead of Richard Antinucci's 1m 04.268s lap from a couple of minutes earlier that was ultimately good enough to secure second place and an all-Carlin front row.

Third was Rob Austin who, like Green, put in one flyer midway through through the session.

Nelson Piquet Jnr was the only driver to consistently lap in the mid 1m 04s and set the fourth fastest lap of the session, but subsequently had his time disallowed due to a brake measurement infringement and will be unable to take part in the race.
