FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR FOR T-SPORT
Donington Park, UK -- 22 April 2007: Sergio Perez took T-Sport's first national class win of the 2007 British F3 International season at Donington today whilst his team-mate, Rodolfo Gonzalez, secured a top six finish in the championship class of race two.
The weekend didn't get off to an auspicious start for the young Mexican as he was unable to get a clear lap in qualifying so, although he had the pace for it, he couldn't take the top spot. He made up for this in the second qualifying session, putting his car on pole for race two.
Sergio's target for this weekend was to finish both races in the points as his season started with two non-finishes at Oulton Park. He took second place in race one and was pleased to get his first podium and first points of the season. Rodolfo meanwhile had some clutch slip off the line in race one which compromised his start and 12th position was as high as last year's National Class Champion could go.
Rodolfo's mechanics worked fast between the races to change the clutch on his car to give him the best possible chance of a good start for race two. The Venezuelen took off like a rocket from 13th spot on the grid and, managing to avoid the melee from the Old Hairpin up to McLeans, came around to start lap two in fifth position. He maintained his pace and held onto fifth until the very last lap when Alberto Valerio slipped through as Rodolfo was negotiating backmarkers.
Sergio had an equally brilliant start in race two and also managed to avoid the first lap drama, getting up to 11th place by lap two. He drove a mature race, keeping Michael Meadows in his mirrors throughout. The pair were then joined by Frankie Cheng, rounding out the national class top three. This was the first F3 victory for Sergio and it was a happy Mexican who took to the podium after the race.
"Sergio did a great job there," said T-Sport Team Principal, Russell Eacott. "He showed he has the maturity to put the dramas of Oulton Park behind him and get the job done. I was pleased with Rodolfo's race pace this afternoon. After a tough time in qualifying it was good to earn some solid points."
The next races for T-Sport are at the new street circuit in the Romanian capital of Bucharest on 19/20 May.
