Andre Lotterer claimed his first pole position in the British Formula Three Championship at Donington Park, and soon followed that by taking pole position for race two as well.
In the first qualifying session Lotterer's initial flying lap was over a second faster than anyone else's, and as the times improved the Jaguar driver was consistently ahead. Anthony Davidson (Carlin) and Derek Hayes (Manor) managed to lap within half a second of the fastest time before a brief shower damped the track. Within four laps those drivers who had stayed out were back on the pace and lapping on the edge of the 1m 30s barrier. James Courtney (Jaguar), Paul Edwards (Alan Docking Racing) and Gianmaria Bruni (Fortec) were the first to lap in the 1m 29s range, but then Lotterer responded by being the first and only driver to go under 1m 29s. Hayes and Edwards were improving and setting their fastest times when the session was red-flagged. At the restart there was enough time for two or three laps before the rain fell again, and James Courtney was the only driver to improve on his time and the only driver to lap under 1m 30s during this window.
Qualifying for the second session started on a wet track that dried quickly during the session. Nicholas Kiesa (Prost) was initially fastest although at this point the times were 11 seconds slower than the first session. As the times improved the drivers changed to slicks. Takuma Sato (Carlin) pitted on just his second lap and Matt Davies (Avanti) on his fifth lap, decisions which caused the tyres to go off slightly towards the end of the session. The times were faster during this session with Manor drivers Derek Hayes and Jeffrey Jones consistently lapping under 1m 30s. Meanwhile Lotterer was driving more slowly, before pulling out a single fast lap at 1m 28.460s. Davies, Sato, Hayes and Davidson were not quite able to respond and so line up behind Lotterer.
