Spa 24: Audi on top after rain-affected opening hours

After a difficult first four hours of the Spa 24 Hours, Audi held sway as Rene Rast/Laurens Vanthoor/Markus Winkelhock led after three safety car periods in wet weather.

An early safety car period created havoc as the top three stole a lap advantage after the officials failed to pick up the top three.

Rain, and a number of accidents, caused three early safety car periods, which put the Team WRT Audi into the lead by 8pm, with the Saineteloc Audi R8 of Marc Basseng/Greg Guilvert/Edwards Sandstrom in second with early leaders Alvaro Parente/Adrian Quaife-Hobbs/Bruno Senna (McLaren 650S) third for Von Ryan Racing.

Local heroes Marc VDS were out of sync on pit strategy early on and the better-placed car of Augusto Farfus/Maxime Martin/Dirk Werner ran fourth.

The road was almost dry by 2030 meaning slick tyres were imminent.
