Davy Cook back in the saddle at Sebring
(Sebring, Florida) February 15th, 2002 - 2001 Barber Dodge Pro Series Rookie of the Year contender Davy Cook returned to action this week at Sebring International Raceway for testing. It was Cook's first two-day test in the Barber Dodge Reynard 98E since the Laguna Seca finale last October.
Cook, 19 of Tallahassee, Florida battled for the Rookie of the Year honors all the way down to the last three corners of the last race. At season's end he compiled four top five finishes, eight top ten's and one pole position in the rain at Lime Rock Park in Round 3. At the conclusion of the Barber Dodge season, Cook earned a nomination to the 2001 Team USA Scholarship Program put on by journalist Jeremy Shaw, emerging among 4 others, as a finalist to compete in a shootout at Buttonwillow Raceway in California. In the end, Cook missed out on a scholarship but nevertheless adds the experience to his growing racing resume. For 2002 Cook returns to the Barber Dodge Pro Series to contend for the championship and in preparation, recently tested on the Sebring test track.
"These two days of testing went really well for me," explains Cook. "It was time to shake off the cobwebs. The Barber Dodge crew did a magnificent job. As a result, I was able to accomplish a lot. My coach, Mike Zimicki of Sliderule Motorsports and I worked non-stop on car set-up, gathering information, as I tried to adapt my driving style to the racecar's handling and still run consistently and quickly. While working on many set-up changes to the car, we found some that worked well and I was able to click off the quickest laps of any driver on both days. That was a nice bonus as my goal is to win the series, though I have a ton of hard work to do both on and off the track to make that a reality."
Cook will again take to the track next week with all the drivers during Spring Training at the Sebring Modified track in preparation for the season. The series opener will be on March 16th at Sebring International Raceway during the 12 Hour weekend.
