HICKORY, NC-Holley Performance Products, Inc., of Bowling Green, KY, in conjunction with Briggs & Stratton Motorsports unveiled a new champ kart engine kit during KartFest 2001 at Hickory, NC's Metro Trade Center January 26th 28th. Beginning as a basic Briggs & Stratton 10 horsepower Intek engine the kit comes with Holley after market performance parts that more than double the rated horse power. According to Holley Powersports Manager Jamie Butler, "David Oglesby and I have been going to national events for the past couple of years and we've been watching the champs karts particularly and we believe that champ karts of the future of karting. We felt that heavy drivers needed more torque and came up with this package."
Added to the 10-horse power Briggs & Stratton Intek engine are bullet flywheel and connecting rod, a heavier valve spring and a roller rocker arm . Customers or their engine builders assemble the engine. "Our goal is to hav e it at approximately 25-horse power out of the box with 25-foot pounds of torque," Butler explained. "Our target customers are heavy champ kart drivers who need more torque.
The kit will get its first real testing this year at the North Carolina Divisional Dirt Series. "We have to iron out the rules and intend on runnin g it in WKA dirt nationals in 2002," said Butler. "We've dyno'ed it,' said Oglesby, "and I think it's going to be a scary ride.
