Alternative and Bio-Fuel Work Wins 2007 Innovation & Technology Award for Shell
Shell's ground-breaking developments in alternative and bio-fuels have been recognised with the Innovation & Technology Award presented by the UK's Motorsport Industry Association on Thursday 10 January 2008. The award was made in recognition of Shell's achievements in developing its gas to liquids (GTL) fuel that played a part in Audi's back to back victories in the 2006 and 2007 Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race.
Shell GTL Fuel is a synthetic diesel fuel made from natural gas which can be used in conventional diesel engines. This clear, odourless synthetic fuel has outstanding cetane quality and purity, so that it burns more cleanly and efficiently than conventional diesel. This technology provides a bridge to low carbon fuel technologies such as biomass to liquids (BTL).
Richard Karlstetter, Global Technology Manager Racing Fuel, Shell Global Solutions, said "Shell's involvement in motorsport at the highest level is an integral part of our extensive Research & Development programme and is essential to continually improving our fuels. We're thrilled to receive this recognition for the continuing work in developing alternative fuels and advanced biofuels and considering Motorsport as the ideal proving ground for performance demonstration."
This is the first time this prestigious award has been granted to an energy and petrochemical company, demonstrating Shell's position as a leader in future fuel technology.
Don VanValkenburgh, Global Motorsports & Automotive Commercial Manager, Shell Racing Solutions*, said: "This is a major step forward in the development and introduction of alternative fuels and advanced biofuels. Motorsport is an invaluable arena that we use to develop, prove and demonstrate the performance and practicality of these and other advanced fuels."
*Shell Racing Solutions is a business group within the Shell Global Solutions network of independent technology companies in the Shell Group.
