DEARBORN, Mich. (12/5/2006) -- Safety is the focus of two awards to be presented today at the SAE Motorsports Engineering Conference & Exhibition.
* The recipient of the 2006 SAE Motorsports Engineering Conference Award is the FIA Institute. The FIA Institute encourages the rapid development of new and improved safety technologies, facilitates higher standards of education and training, and raises awareness of safety issues within the motorsports community. Accepting the award on behalf of the FIA Institute is Professor Sid Watkins.
* Receiving the 2006 MSEC Motorsports Achievement Award is Steve Peterson, head scientist for NASCAR. Peterson was instrumental in establishing the NASCAR Safety Center.
The SAE Motorsports Engineering Conference & Exhibition continues through Thursday, Dec. 7 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Dearborn, Mich.
Upcoming highlights to note include:
PKV Racing driver Katherine Legge -- the first female racer to run full-time in the Champ Car World Series -- will appear Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
Legge scored a victory in her first Atlantic race (Long Beach, 2005), making her the first female driver to win a major open-wheel race in United States. In that same year, she tested a Champ Car, Formula 1 car and an A1GP car in the offseason before signing with PKV Racing.
Along with Legge, International Motorsports Hall of Famer Bobby Rahal will be the conference's banquet speaker. Among other motorsports professionals participating in the conference are Champ Car's Scott Elkins, NHRA's Don Taylor, Nick Hayes of Richard Childress Racing, as well as two of SAE's most famous members, Neil Ressler and Peter Wright.
