Petrobras, the biggest Brazilian oil company, will continue sponsoring Williams/BMW F1 Team and Petrobras F-3000 Junior Team in 2001. The announcement was made by Mr. Claudio Thompson, who coordinates Petrobras' sponsorship program.

The total motorsports budget is kept under secret but the amount is not higher than US$ 10 million. It includes, for example, both Williams-BMW F1 technical sponsor and the expenses with Petrobras Jr Team, which takes part at the FIA International F-3000 Championship. Petrobras develops high performance lubs and fuels together with Williams-BMW Team. This season, Petrobras will supply Williams with 160.000 liters fuel. To Petrobras Junior Team, the company will give about 600 liters fuel during the year.

"We are proud to take a F-3000 race out of Europe for the first time in history", said Mr. Thompson, remembering that the first race this year will be at the Interlagos circuit, in Sao Paulo, on March 31st.

Apart from Williams and Petrobras Jr Team, Petrobras sponsors many local formulas, like Stock Car (the Brazilian version of the American Nascar), Formula Chevrolet, Southamerican Formula 3 (together with Avallone Motorsports), Go-kart and Mini Baja. Petrobras also has a team taking part at the Rally Paris-Dakar.

"We changed our strategy last season and stopped sponsoring drivers. This season we will continue investing on teams and testing new technologies with them, which help us to develop new products thinking on our consumers", said Mr. Thompson.
