EUROPEAN NEW CAR ASSESSMENT PROGRAMME (EURO NCAP)

Max Mosley today resigned as chairman of Euro NCAP, a position he has held since the organisation began in 1996. He said,

"As a result of the progress which the car industry has made in protecting drivers and passengers, we are now seeing almost exclusively four and even five star cars."

"The next big area of progress is the avoidance or mitigation of an accident before it happens. Getting this active safety right is a major challenge and will require more time from the chairman than I am now able to give. I am therefore stepping down after eight years, but I am confident that the FIA and the FIA Foundation will continue fully to support Euro NCAP both financially and technically."

Euro NCAP is Europe's leading independent crash test programme. Identified by the European Commission as the most cost effective road safety action available to the EU. The Commission has commented that Euro NCAP has brought forward the benefits of crash test legislation introduced in 1998 by five years.
