A medical rescue helicopter will be on station at all Bankfin Off Road Championship events this season.

The season opens with the Barberspan 500 on March 22 and 23, with the availability of the rescue helicopter made possible by the recent agreement between Bankfin, Ford, Nissan and Toyota and the MSA Off-Road Car Racing Commission. The fully ICU equipped STAR helicopter will be manned by a doctor and a paramedic and will have the capacity to carry a stretcher patient, and will also be utilised for aerial television filming.

"Medical evacuation will take precedence over TV filming, and the presence of the helicopter provides a peace of mind benefit for competitors," said MSA Off-Road Car Racing Commission president Piet Swanepoel. "We fervently hope the helicopter will never be needed for medical purposes, but its presence is an early and tangible benefit of our agreement with Bankfin and the manufacturers."

Documentation and scrutineering for the Barberspan 500 will open at 08h30 at Leeupan on March 22 with the Prologue to determine start positions for racing section two, scheduled to start at 13h00. Racing section two on March 23 will start at 08h00 with the first competitor scheduled back at Leeupan at around 15h30.
