HARRISBURG, N.C. (October 9, 2000) -- The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America finalized its dates for its 2001 event.
The annual cross-country motorcycle trek, entering its seventh year, will leave from Sacramento, CA, on June 24, 2001, arriving at the Petty Farm in Trinity, NC on July 1. The route for the ride will be finalized within the coming months.
Petty will join the ride after competing in the NASCAR Winston Cup race at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, CA, on June 24. The following weekend is an off-weekend for Petty, as the Winston Cup Series has no race event scheduled.
This year's departure city and date mark a change from previous years' rides. In 2000, the ride departed in late April from Ontario, CA, home of California Speedway. Kyle Petty, founder of the event, believes changing the start date and location was the appropriate choice for the 2001 Ride. "Looking at the calendar in conjunction with NASCAR's schedule for 2001, this was just the best week to hold the ride," states Petty. "The past couple of years, the rides were held in late April. This year we're not leaving until late June so the weather should be a little warmer. Plus we are leaving from Sacramento, so for those who have been riding with us for the past couple years, it will provide a variety in where we start our journey."
Diane Hough, director of the Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary (WCRWA), has coordinated the details of the Charity Ride since its inception in 1995. Hough agrees with Petty that the dates of the ride will benefit its success. "With the early release of the 2001 NASCAR schedule, it allowed us to establish a date for the 2001 Charity Ride earlier than we normally could have and that is definitely an advantage for everyone who is involved with the ride," Hough stated. "For the riders, sponsors and those who plan the ride we are able to get a jump start on the details for the 2001 event, hopefully providing more opportunities to raise funds to help the charitable organizations we're involved with.
Since its formation in 1995, The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America has raised nearly two million dollars for various children's hospitals and the WCRWA.
