As the 2001 Indy Racing League series came to a close, so did perhaps Galles Racing. Team sponsor, Starz Super Park, informed Rick Galles that they would not be renewing as a sponsor for the 2002 season. Since that fateful day in November, Galles Racing has been working full-time to find a sponsor for the team and driver Al Unser Jr.
Without a confirmed sponsor for the 2002 season, it is very likely that Galles Racing may have to close leaving Unser without a ride. Rick Galles has given permission to Unser to look for another ride.
For the past two seasons, Galles Racing has had its ups and downs especially compared to the success they had with the Unser/Galles combination from the past. This season, Unser finished seventh in points, with one win at Gateway.
Unser left Team Penske and the FedEx Championship Racing series at the end of 1999 to return to, Galles Indy Racing team.
Testing for the 2002 season has already started for most of the Indy Racing teams and many of the drivers have signed or are negotiating contracts.
In an unsubstantiated report from a very reliable source, it is unlikely the two-time Indy 500 Champion will sit out the 2002 Indy 500 as his salary is guaranteed by Tony George.
