Charlotte, NC - Race fans have only a few more days to go online and bid on a number of one of a kind collectibles being auctioned off for charity.
Items up for bid include race-used gloves, shoes, tires, sheet metal and even a racing uniform donated by young professional racers. Bidders can access the auction, which ends December 22, at www.snowballinteractive.com/codemasters.
All proceeds from the auction go to benefit charities in memory of the late Adam Petty, the fourth-generation driver who lost his life in a racing accident at New Hampshire International Raceway in May.
Drivers who've donated to the auction include JasonJarrett, a third-generation racer who is also the son of stock car champion Dale Jarrett, Justin Labonte, son of two-time champion Terry Labonte, HankParker Jr. and Lyndon Amick.
All four drivers were friends with Petty and competed against him in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division during the 2000 season, and they all came up with some special items to help raise money in memory of their fallen friend.
"Adam was a very special person to all of us," said Jason Jarrett. "He really enjoyed life, and he gave a lot back by donating his time and energies to help other people. We wanted this auction to be special,so we came up with some pieces that we thought race fans would really like. Alot of these pieces are real collector's items, so hopefully we can raise a lot of money for some good causes and make some fans happy at the same time."
Some of the more notable items up for bid include a tire signed by the entire No. 45 Sprint Racing team that Adam Petty drove for, a hood off one of the No. 11 Rayovac Maximum Racing entries that Jason Jarrett drove this past season, a custom-made Simpson firesuit that Lyndon Amick wore during the 1999 race season, and a pair of gloves that Hank Parker, Jr. used in27 races during the 2000 season.
The most sought after auction items so far are the Honorary Pit Crew Memberships that Jarrett, Labonte, Parker and Amick have each donated. Four lucky winners (one winning bidder per driver) will get the chance to attend a race, hang out with their driver and crew, and be an honorary member of the pit crew on race day.
"The Honorary Pit Crew Membership really will give a fan the chance to feel like they're a part of our race team," said Hank Parker, Jr. "I know a lot of fans have always wanted to walk through the garage and see what a pit crew does to get prepared on race day, and this will definitely give them that chance."
The auction, which is being sponsored by Snowball.com and Codemasters, came together as a result of the four drivers involvement in Codemasters new racing videogame for the Sony Playstation, Jarrett and Labonte Stock Car Racing. Jason Jarrett and Justin Labonte are featured in the game and on the packaging, with Parker and Amick also serving as spokespersons for the new title.
