It's officially "a wrap" for 2011 NAIAS

The 2011 NAIAS concluded an overwhelmingly successful run with increases across the board: in international media turn out, vehicles revealed, manufacturer returns for 2011 (and 2012), as well as public attendance figures. There was electricity in the air at the show, both literally and figuratively, as automakers took the wraps off 55 new products, 35 of those never-before-seen as worldwide debuts. With an increased focus on hybrid and electric vehicle technology, the show validated the promises made by exhibitors in 2009 and 2010 that new products were on the horizon. The return of Porsche this year and the announcement that Nissan will come back to the show in 2012, added to the energized spirit that permeated the show floor. The 2011 NAIAS was a show with unprecedented product after two years of a challenged global economy. It was a show where optimism was pervasive and where the industry's resurgence was on display for the world to see. It was a show where promises were validated three-fold!

Reveals Drive Media Attendance

With the unveiling of 35 never-before-seen worldwide vehicles, the NAIAS was a magnet for media from around the world. In total, 5,183 international journalists attended the show, 647 more than last year. The show drew media from every corner of the globe and country -- from India to Indiana, Malaysia to Massachusetts and New Zealand to New Mexico. A total of 577 media alone came from New York and 319 from California.

Getting Ready for 2012 NAIAS

Planning is already underway for 2012 NAIAS as show committee members take to the international auto show circuit talking to current exhibitors as well as potential participants. The 2012 press conference schedule, too, is already being reviewed. NAIAS leadership is planning a two-day 2012 press conference schedule to accommodate anticipated news as well as the likelihood of increased manufacturer representation. Bill Perkins, 2012 NAIAS Chairman, indicated the recent show has set a strong foundation for the next year. "NAIAS Chairman Barron Meade provided the leadership necessary to maintain the NAIAS' position as one of the top motor shows in the world. We are all grateful for his contributions," Perkins noted.

Watch for Exciting NAIAS National, Local Broadcasts this Weekend

NBC Sports' "International Auto Show" special will air this Sunday, Jan. 30 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. EST. The show will provide an up-close and personal look at some of the hottest and most fascinating vehicles displayed at this year's NAIAS. Locally, WWJ-TV CBS Detroit, with the Detroit Economic Club and the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, presented a headline-grabbing "BIG FOUR" event at this year's NAIAS featuring Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. The event will be aired locally on a "Michigan Matters" special at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 on WWJ-TV CBS Detroit.

The Gallery Captures the Essence of Ultra Luxury

For the fourth year in a row, invitation-only guests were treated to a display of the world's most exotic vehicles at The Gallery. Organized by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association and held at the MGM Grand Detroit, The Gallery showcased 28 ultra-luxury vehicles valued at $6 million from some of the world's most prestigious marques -- including Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Maserati and Bentley, to name a few. The evening opened with cuisine prepared by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. The 600 guests then moved to the venue's 14,000-square-foot ballroom to savor the vehicles on display. According to the organizers, the event was an overwhelming success with several million in sales consummated that evening.

Global Audience Grows for Industry Preview

A total 21,676 visitors representing 1,900 companies from 27 countries attended NAIAS Industry Preview, a two-day networking opportunity that combines the latest automotive products and services with the key minds behind them all under one roof. Attendance at this year's Industry Preview was yet another reflection of the industry's comeback; attendance was up 5,036 over last year.

NAIAS Serves as Backdrop for Industry, Design Awards

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the 2011 Ford Explorer were named North American Car and Truck of the Year at the NAIAS. The NACTOY awards were just two of the many independent industry and design awards presented during the show. The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology's 2011 EyesOn Design Awards for Best Concept Vehicle and Best Production Vehicle were presented to the Porsche 918 RSR concept and the Audi A6, respectively. Editors of AutoWeek magazine selected their show favorites during the AutoWeek Design Forum: Porsche 918 RSR concept, Best in Show; BMW 1-Series M Coupe, Most Fun; 2011 Chrysler 300, Most Significant; and Ford Vertrek, Best Concept. Michelin also used its exhibit to showcase winning entries from the Michelin Challenge Design.

Innovation Draws Government Leaders to NAIAS

A host of government and industry policy makers visited the 2011 NAIAS, once again reinforcing the integral role the show plays on global, national and local fronts. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder toured the show for the first time as an elected official, speaking at the "Smarter Living In Michigan" exhibition and NAIAS Education Day. U.S. House members spotted at the show include: House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, Michigan Reps. John Dingell, Debbie Stabenow, Sander Levin, Hansen Clarke and Gary Peters and Rep. John Campbell of California. U.S. Senators Bob Corker of Tennessee and Thomas Carper of Delaware also visited, as did Rob Bloom, U.S. Department of Treasury. Governors John Kasich of Ohio and Phil Bredesen of Tennessee also spent time at the NAIAS. Detroit's very own Mayor Dave Bing took a special tour of the show as well.

Final Cobo Expansion Plans Revealed Soon

Expansion and improvements to Cobo Center will accelerate during the next 12 months and beyond. In addition to the $83 million in facility improvements that are nearly complete, the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority will soon reveal plans for the final and most expansive stage of Cobo Center's renovation, a major $200 million initiative. Stay tuned for a public reveal of the bold, exciting and innovative renovation plans for the facility itself and planned enhancements to vital elements that support the NAIAS. Multicultural Events Celebrate Diversity

Three events held during this year's NAIAS underscored the multi-faceted audiences drawn to Detroit during the world-premier show. Now in its 15th year, the Urban Wheel Awards event celebrated inclusion in the auto industry and honored companies and individuals who have made progress toward embracing this reality. "Driven: A Tribute to African American Achievement in the Automotive Industry," the first-ever auto industry book to present African American triumphs in the automotive industry, was unveiled at Cobo Center on Jan. 12. A third event, the Multicultural Media Luncheon, honored minorities in the automotive industry and featured the theme, "Building Brands Through Urban Markets" with keynote speaker Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Smarter Living Generates NAIAS Buzz

"Smarter Living In Michigan," the interactive exhibition presented by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) with consulting support by DTE Energy, generated the interest of thousands of people at the 2011 NAIAS. In the MEDC Town Square, show visitors were given an opportunity to preview alternative energy technologies and develop a greater appreciation for the expertise and entrepreneurial spirit associated with these dynamic new green technologies. The exhibit also reinforced Michigan's position as a worldwide leader in investment and jobs associated with these new industries.

Spotted in the Crowd

While the vehicles took center stage at the NAIAS, there were a few other head-turners at the show, including a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and an Olympic medalist, just to name a few. Pop star Colbie Caillat helped Mercedes Benz present its C-Class and performed her hit "Bubbly" at the automaker's press conference. U.S. Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin took the BMW stage as the automaker unveiled its 6 Series Convertible. Former Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz helped unveil Honda's "Sounds of Civic Contest." While national and local celebrities took an active role in press conferences, others were simply drawn to the NAIAS to see the glitz and glamour of the real stars of the show, the more than 500 vehicles on display.

Industry, Community Band Together for Kids

The 2011 NAIAS Charity Preview continued to be one of the top single-night fundraising events in the nation as 10,649 guests helped raise $2.6 million for local children's charities. This year, Charity Preview featured a Motor City musical favorite, "The Rockets." Since its inception in 1976, Charity Preview has raised nearly $82 million, $37 million of which was raised in the last seven years alone. Sponsors of the 2011 Charity Preview included: RBS Charter One, presenting sponsor; Delta Airlines, Comcast and MGM Grand Detroit, sponsors of the VIP Ribbon-Cutting Party; and Art Van Furniture, providing special additional support.

Public Show Attendance Jumps

Public days at the NAIAS were enthusiastically greeted by 735,370 visitors. Total attendance was up 21,233 over last year. There was plenty going on during the public show to capture interest. The Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan made a stop at NAIAS, featuring player appearances and an interactive Q & A session. The first-ever Channel 7 Family Day, hosted by local ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV gave show visitors a chance to meet on-air personalities and special guest, Lisa Locicero from ABC's General Hospital. NAIAS Education Day, presented by State Farm Insurance, opened the show up to high school and college students, providing a unique opportunity to explore automotive career paths and learn about trends in the auto industry.
