The St. Petersburg Florida city council approved a 2003 CART race on Thursday November 29th. The council discussed concerns about noise, traffic problems, around the proposed course in the downtown area and balanced this against the world-wide television exposure, thousands of visitors, and millions of dollars. In the end, they gave unanimous approval for the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach to seek sanctioning for a CART race.

The city of Tampa, across the bay from St Petersburg, is expected to give final approval to seek a CART race shortly.

It will then be up to CART to decide where to hold a race. No decision is expected until after December 15th.

Motorsport.com will provide updates as events warrant.
