Lola Cars International Ltd is pleased to announce the appointment of Rupert Manwaring as the company's new Managing Director.
Manwaring, 46, has a wealth of motorsport experience, having worked in management for some of Formula One's most famous teams. Brabham, Lotus, and Tyrrell all benefited from Rupert's invaluable leadership skills over the last two decades. He has most recently held the post of Managing Director at the European Minardi F1 Team, joining them last year and helping them seal their first championship points for three seasons in 2002.
As an integral part of winning F1 teams, Manwaring has also worked closely with some of the legends of motorsport, including Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet, and with his close friend, the late Dr Harvey Postlethwaite, at Tyrrell and later the Honda F1 operation.
Manwaring said, "I am looking forward to playing my part in extending Lola's heritage and taking the business into the future. Having seenthe impressive workforce and facilities at Lola, I believe we have the resources we need to achieve even greater success in our existing markets and to succeed in new areas of motorsport and even beyond."
Commenting on Manwaring's appointment, Lola Chairman, Martin Birrane, said, "I am delighted to welcome Rupert to Lola Cars as Managing Director. He has proved in a variety of positions over many years, particularly in the highpressure environment of Formula One, that he has the right attributes to take on and further grow Lola's successful global business."
Lola's acting CEO since July, Howard Dawson, who remains on th e board, commented, "Rupert has impeccable credentials to spearhead Lola's progress in all its various activities. He will use his passion for motorsport to maintain and strengthen Lola's position as the world's leading customer race carmanufacturer and developer."
Rupert Manwaring started his career in motorsport with former Lola F1 driver John Surtees in the late 1970s and quickly ascended to Assistant Team Manager. Approached by Brabham in 1979, Rupert became part of the team's 'golden era', contributing to its World Championship wins in 1981 and 1983. Promoted toTeam Manager in 1984, Rupert was part of a talented group that included future F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and FIA officials Charlie Whiting and Herbie Blash.
A brief spell with the Kraco Indycar team was followed by two years with the Beatrice Team Haas F1 operation that ran Lola chassis in Grand Prix competition in the mid-1980s.
1987 saw Rupert join Team Lotus asassistant to Peter Warr, a period that saw the culmination of a successful partnership with then rising superstar Ayrton Senna. Staying with Lotus until 1990, Ken Tyrrell approached Rupert to be his Team Manager, a position he held until 1995 when he took on a new challenge as Head of Marketing.
He stayed with Tyrrell until 1998, leaving the team in the wake of its sale to join the Honda Racing Developments F1 project, whic h he set up together with Dr Harvey Postlethwaite. Since 2001, Rupert has occupied the position of Managing Director at Paul Stoddart's European Minardi F1 Team.
