Robby Gordon, driver of the No. 4 KODAK MAX Film Monte Carlo, discusses the much debated issue of wearing the HANS device (Head and Neck Support). Many feel the device, if worn during competition, could reduce head and neck injuries by impact. "First, I would like to say that my thoughts are with the Earnhardt and Childress families and all of the employees of DEI and RCR. This is a loss of immeasurable magnitude to the world of auto racing and the entire nation. "Now on safety issues. I do not know much about the HANS device. I have inquired about it. I have tried it on. As a direct result of what happened in the 500, I have ordered the support system and hope to wear it during the race in Rockingham. All of us have more to learn about the HANS device. "I have competed in many forms of racing. I would say that CART is the most vocal on safety issues. They mandate safety devices and follow through to make sure they are incorporated by each team. "Obviously, NASCAR is focused on making its sport safer. Driver and fan safety is an ongoing learning process as the sport grows more technologically advanced and more populated with race attendees. The manufacturers are also more involved in learning and testing new safety devices. One of the main items is a safer seat compartment. "I use an Indy car seat in my Winston Cup car. The seat is stronger. It holds a driver in place more. It also has an insert that molds to a person's body and makes the body and seat one. This adds more cushion to absorb impact and it keeps the body movement to a minimum. Bars are longer around the sides of the head, which reduces side to side movement. The insert has an added pad for protection behind the neck and back of head area. "Adding the HANS device to features already in place will keep head movement to the front from happening. I am not saying these features will protect everyone in every situation, but I think this seat is safer than most. All of us need to rally together to figure out ways to make these cars safer. "It will be difficult to go to Rockingham. Racing is what we do and the best way to begin the healing process is to move forward."
