BMW Motorsport and Dunlop enter into technical partnership.
Munich, 3rd October 2009. Dunlop, one of the world's leading manufacturers of high and ultra-performance tyres, is a new Technical Partner of BMW Motorsport. As part of the long-term partnership, the company will provide tyres for the BMW M3 GT2, which is currently in action in the American Le Mans Series, and apply its decades of experience to the further development of the GT sports car. Furthermore, Dunlop will also supply tyres to BMW customer racing cars, such as the BMW M3 GT4.
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says: "We have already worked closely, and extremely successfully, with Dunlop when developing the BMW M3 GT2. I am pleased that we can now build on this partnership in the long term. BMW Motorsport and Dunlop have a very similar approach to racing: it is all about transferring the experience gained on the race track to series models, thus allowing us to offer products with even higher performance levels. The technology transfer has always been of great importance to both sides."
"It is a well known fact that BMW builds highly-efficient production and racing cars. Therefore, Dunlop brings a great deal of new technologies into the partnership," adds Frederic Schilling, Dunlop Marketing Director for Europe and the Middle East. "Furthermore, our cooperation also is interesting regarding our joint target group. We are planning joint activities in this area, too."
Dunlop has always used motorsport as a technological catalyst. What the company learns on the race track is immediately applied on the street. Dunlop engineers were the first to transfer race track standards to tyres developed for everyday traffic.
The company has been involved in racing since the start of the 20th century. After initial high-speed records, Dunlop celebrated its first triumph at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1924 and has, to date, added over 30 further victories at this endurance classic. Dunlop was also successful in Formula One: between 1958 and 1970 drivers on Dunlop tyres won 82 Grands Prix and eight world championship titles.
