CONCORD, N.C., (May 18, 2001) - There are fast cars at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway for Tony Stewart to drive, and there are well-qualified crew members at both venues to tune those fast cars. But how does a driver, particularly one who plans to drive those fast cars 1,100 miles in one day, keep his body in tune?
For Stewart, who will pilot a Target/Home Depot G-Force Aurora Indy Racing League entry for roughly three hours at the Brickyard before jumping into his Home Depot Pontiac in Charlotte for roughly four more hours of racing, he acquired the services of a certified athletic trainer.
Al Shuford, formerly with the NFL's Carolina Panthers, may just be the most important element to Stewart's second attempt at Double Duty. Shuford's 24 years of experience in sports medicine has been called upon to ensure that Stewart is physically able to complete the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 27.
When Stewart competed in both races in 1999, he fared well, placing ninth at Indy and fourth at Charlotte. But the rigors of the day eventually caught up with Stewart in the waning laps of the Coca-Cola 600. Dehydration and exhaustion began to set in, and when the checkered flag waved, Stewart needed medical attention.
Shadowing Stewart since he first put on a firesuit at Indy on May 7 has been Shuford. Creating a fitness regimen and implementing a proper diet for Stewart was the mission Shuford was given, and it appears that Shuford's knowledge and stewardship has given Stewart an added advantage that perhaps was lacking in 1999.
For reasons as to why Shuford is perhaps Stewart's best key to success in Double Duty II, all one needs to do his scroll through his impressive list of credentials.
