Leal feels confident looking to Spa
Julian Leal will be among the drivers to keep an eye on in Spa. The Colombian driver, despite being just 20 years-old, has a lot of experience on the Belgian track having raced there three times, two of them in Euroseries 3000, in 2007 and 2008. Given the good performances shown in Brno and Imola, circuits that he had never seen before, the driver from Bogotà has a clear aim: fighting for the top spots in both races.
"I'm looking forward to Spa - Leal says - and not only because it's a special circuit for every driver. Obviously the fact that it's a wonderful track to race on has a part in this, but I was looking forward to this race because I know the track really well. I raced there three times, and in 2009 we had rain for the whole weekend, so I learned also the right line for wet conditions. It's the first time that I race with Auto GP on a track I know, so I hope that this will be an advantage for me".
For the driver's body Spa is a very demanding track. With those high speed corners, the loads on the neck are massive, did you do any special training for this?
"Well, first of all racing both in WsR and Auto GP is a good training. Besides this, when I'm at home I train every day at Formula Medicine, in their headquarter in Viareggio. Their staff know everything a driver needs to be prepared for a particular circuit, so for Spa we made some special training for the neck".
Despite being so young you have a great experience on high-powered cars, and you raced in Euroseries 3000 for two seasons. What do you think about Auto GP?
"I feel that it's much better from every possible point of view. The drivers level is higher, and that's very important because being in front with this grid means beating some of the best guys around. Also the new car is much better than the previous one, and you can tell that non only because of the laptimes, but also because it gives more confidence to the driver".
The team you race with, Trident, is racing also in GP2. Does this gives you greater confidence in their job?
"The team is vital for the driver's performance, and that's why being with a very skilled team is so important. As soon as I started racing with Trident I realized that they are one of the best teams around. They take care of everything in a very professional way, ever detail is in the right place. Thanks to this, I can just sit in the car and concentrate on my job, driving!".
What are your expectations for the championship?
"My aim is being steadily in the points, and to do that I think that I need to improve in qualifying. I'm not worried about the race pace because I'm often among the fastest drivers on track, but to make the most of this I have to start in front. I'm working on that with the team, and I'm sure that some great results are just around the corner".
