First podium for Jan Charouz in AutoGP
Jan Charouz likes Spa-Francorchamps a lot and he will probably like it even more after the AutoGP weekend. The Charouz-Gravity Racing Team driver scored points in both races and was third in the second race which means first podium in the AutoGp for him.
Charouz made a good start and the Czech driver passed Johny Reid after a spectacular fight. The Prague driver was unable to resist attack from Giorgio Pantano later in the race and went back to fourth which he held till the mandatory pitstops.
The first drivers went to the pits after lap 4 and Charouz visited pits one lap later as the leading trio continued. The drivers pitted as the race progressed until lap 10 out of 13.
Charouz was fourth after mandatory pitstop were finished but was under pressure from Reid. He overtook the Czech on lap 10. The Charouz-Gravity Racing had to fought off Edoardo Piscopo's attacks but he managed to keep the championship leader behind.
Swiss Natacha Gachnang finished in his first AutoGp race 12th. Frenchman Adrien Tambay who won for Charouz-Gravity Racing Team first race in the AutoGP at Imola had to retire on lap 1.
The results of the first race determined grid of the afternoon's race with first eight reversed. Jan Charouz was therefore fourth again. The official Renault F1 reserve driver had a good start and put pressure on Julian Leal and moved to third after his mistake.
The safety car was deployed after third lap for the first time which helped Grosjean who was just behind Charouz. The Czech driver was fighting in the group of four drivers for second place after restart. The safety car was deployed again after lap 6. The race was restarted one lap later and Grosjean attacked Charouz and moved by. The Frenchman soon overtook also Piscopo and got second.
There was a great battle between Piscopo and Charouz for the last podium position. The Czech driver waited with his attack for the last lap and in the middle part moved to the front. Charouz held the bronze position til lthe flag and for the first time went to the podium in the AutoGP. He also moved up to 6th in the championship thanks to two point finishes this weekend.
Jan's team-mates Adrien Tambay and Natacha Gachnang were fighting with setup of their cars during the whole weekend and finished 10th and 11th in the second race. The Frenchman lost his second placed in the championship and is 5th now. The Charouz-Gravity Racing Team is second among the teams.
Jan Charouz: "Sunday's races were very different from my point of view. The car was not working well in the morning with big oversteer, so I was happy that was able to keep Piscopo behind me. It was completely different in the afternoon. I had brand new tyres and was very quick. It is pity that we had two safety carphases otherwise I am pretty sure that we would be fighting even higher but we did not have a chance. Of course, I am still pretty happy for myself and the team because we managed to get a podium finish."
Adrien Tambay: "Unfortunately, we were on the back foot from the start of the wekend. I did mistakes, the team did mistakes and together we had many problems. Overall impression is completely different to Imola. If we want to fight for the title we can not repeat same mistakes. We have to analyze everything and take measures to not repeat it."
Natacha Gachnang: "It was not an easy weekend. I am a bit disappointed. We had several problems, so I did not enjoy racing much. Of course, I hoped for better results but it was not possible given the circumstances."
