FMSI celebrate victory as Euroseries 3000 kicks off in Portimao
The 2009 Euroseries 3000 Championship got underway this weekend, with the action taking place at the new Portimao circuit in the Algarve, Portugal. The revived championship looks set to be a thriller this season as new championship sponsor Party Poker is ensuring that the winning driver can step up to the GP2 Series for next season.
Fisichella Motor Sport International fielded three strong drivers for the first outing of the season, with Fabio Onidi, Roldan Rodriguez and Rodolfo Gonzalez lining up for the Italian team. The squad tasted success in this first weekend of competition, with Onidi taking a fantastic victory in today's second race.
Fabio Onidi: Qualified in fourth position on Saturday ahead of the afternoon's first race. Finished race one in seventh. Took the overall victory in Sunday's second race to record first win of the season.
Roldan Rodriguez: Qualified tenth on Saturday but did not finish race one after being hit off track and into retirement. Crossed the line in a strong sixth position in Sunday's race.
Rodolfo Gonzalez: Qualified in eighth position on Saturday. Began race one well but was pushed off track and retired from the race due to accident damage. On Sunday finished in 11th place after being forced into an unscheduled pitstop for a nosecone change.
The next round of Euroseries 3000 will take place at Magny Cours in France from 26-28 June.
Paolo Coloni, Team Principal: "I'm really happy to have started the season like this and it is great news for FMSI as a whole as it has been a year without a win so it is a fantastic result for us. It's a great return to form in the Euroseries 3000, made even more special because of the very high level of competition this season. The performance level was surprisingly close between all the teams but we had a very good car. All in all it's been a very positive start."
