Qualifying for Round 10 of the SUPERFUND Euro 3000 Championship took place today ahead of the race on Sunday. Alex Lloyd took his third pole of the season. In second place and starting the race tomorrow next to Lloyd on the front row of the grid is Norbert Siedler of ADM Motorsport. Nicky Pastorelli clocked up the third fastest time of the session.
In changeable conditions, Lloyd set the fastest time in the first Free Practice session of the morning on a damp track ahead of Nicky Pastorelli and Mathias Lauda. The second session was lead by Fausto Ippoliti who finished less than a tenth ahead of Alex Lloyd before the session was stopped due to foggy weather.
The fog lifted in time for Qualifying at 13:40. As the drivers adapted to the changing conditions, the deciding action took place in the final five minutes. Lloyd of John Village Automotive put in a strong flying lap on his second set of new tyres to post the fastest lap of the day with a 1:21.023.
Norbert Siedler set was one of the first drivers out on the second set of slick tyres and clocked up a time that saw him in second place at the conclusion of the session.
Nicky Pastorelli final flying lap was disqualified when he cut the chicane in the final moments of the session. His penultimate time of 1:21.470 puts him third on the grid for Sunday's race.
Championship leader, Fabrizio Del Monte will start at the back of the grid due to drive shaft failure.
Alex Lloyd, John Village Automotive:
"I'm really pleased with pole position for the final race of the championship as it's been a strange day due to the mix of weather conditions. This is my first time at the Nürburgring and it has been tough to learn the track in these conditions. We changed to the first set of slicks midway through the session and reverted to our standard dry weather set-up which we has been pretty successful over the last two races. The car was sliding around a lot today and it's going to be difficult tomorrow as who knows what the track will be like then. Sunday's sorted, now I just have to work on getting it right for Saturday!"
Norbert Siedler (AUT), ADM Motorsport:
"I'm happy to start on the front row on Sunday but pole position would have been better. I was doing well on the first set of dry tyres and set the fastest time. Unfortunately, I came out too early on the second set of tyres and if I'd waited two more minutes I would have easily made pole. But that's racing! I'm hoping for dry weather for the rest of the weekend as we had some problems in the wet this morning in Free Practice."
Nicky Pastorelli (NDL), Draco Junior Team:
"Today's session was not bad for me as I managed to qualify in front of Del Monte which is very important for the outcome of the Championship. I'm slightly frustrated as I made a mistake on the last lap of the session and cut the chicane so my fastest lap of the day was disallowed. However, I'm confidant for the rest of the weekend as we are quick in both wet and dry conditions."
Qualifying for Round 9 will take place tomorrow at 09:30 prior to the race in the afternoon.
