Down poor at Donington

Heavy rain made for an exciting race at the European F3000 Donington GP round of the championship. The Red Bull John Village Automotive team struggled all weekend to qualify 9th and eventually finish 7th in the horrendous conditions. Nelson set the 3rd fastest time of the wet weather tire clad runners.

"We're confused as anyone as to why we are struggling," explained Nelson. "We come from Spa where we finished 2nd, had a great test at Snetterton on Tuesday where we record what is probably the quickest time ever for this spec. F3000 and are 0.5 seconds quicker than P2 in the Friday morning practice until a tire mistake. Then no matter what we did to the car we would just keep doing the same lap times. To go from one end of the grid to the other between races is frustrating and confusing."

Gianmaria Bruni, recently signed Minardi Formula One Team test and reserve driver, went on to win the 38 lap race.

"I now know how Bruni must have felt when after winning the first 2 races he was nowhere after that until now," said Nelson. "At the only track I've had previous experience with I have the worst qualifying session of the year. We were doing similar times to Farfus in 3rd place but when you start at the back you just loose too much time early in the race because of zero visibility. We just never found the setup, which is a first, and can now only look to the next race."

The next round of the championship is at Brno in the Czech Republic September 21st.
