WALKER RACING SIGNS SIMONA De SILVESTRO FOR ATLANTICS
Indianapolis, IN (November 17, 2006)- Walker Racing announced today that it has signed a multi-year contract with Formula BMW USA driver, Simona De Silvestro, who will join the team's three car line up for the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
De Silvestro, a native of Lausanne, Switzerland, is the second woman to race for the team and joins a list of drivers that have competed for Walker Racing, which includes Sarah Fisher. The young woman really made an impression on the team. "We are very happy to have Simona on board with us for next season. I was able to watch her compete in the Formula BMW races this year and was very impressed with her talent and then we tested Simona at MSR in Houston where she did very well. We are looking forward to having her on board for the 2007 season," Walker Racing owner Derrick Walker.
The 18-year-old Swiss, joins the Champ Car Atlantic Series from the competitive Formula BMW USA championship, where she won at Lime Rock, earned six podiums and scored 11 top-ten finishes in 14 races, finishing fourth in the overall championship. She also made history as she was the first woman to ever get on the podium in Indianapolis Motor Speedway, at the USGP back in June. Prior to that De Silvestro participated in the Italian Formula Renault 2000 championship where she won the Super Course of the Italian Racing Federation "Young Drivers".
"I'm very excited about the chance to race in the Atlantic Series and to join Walker Racing for next season. They are a great team to work with and we will be pushing hard to run up front next season and to win rookie of the year," exclaimed De Silvestro.
Walker Racing made the jump to run an Atlantic team last season, announcing the move at the Lexmark Indy 300 in Surfer's Paradise Australia. 2006 marked the first year for the team and a very good season at that, as they brought home the 2006 Champ Car Atlantic Championship title with Frenchman rookie Simon Pagenaud.
De Silvestro participated in the first series of tests that Walker Racing held back in October and marks the first driver to fill one of the spots for the 2007 lineup.
Committed to help young talent grow, Walker Racing will continue preparing for the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic season with another series of tests as they search for interested drivers to complete the lineup for next season. For more updates on the team visit www.walkerracing.com.
