Finnish driver Markus Niemela won the penultimate race of 2008 Formula Atlantic championship in Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, Utah. Niemela started from the pole position in the car of Brooks Associates Racing and led every lap to win by 0.446 seconds over Jonathan Summerton.

Niemela's victory and Summerton's second-place finish coupled with a sixth-place performance by points leader Jonathan Bomarito pushes the championship battle to the season finale at Road Atlanta in two weeks. Just 10 points separate the top-three drivers, with Bomarito holding an eight-point advantage over Summerton, 224-216, and Niemela another two points back with 214. Bomarito, Summerton and Niemela are the only three drivers still in contention for the championship

"It's needless to say that I'm more than happy for this win. It was very important for me, my team and first of all the people who have made it possible for me to race. I had a conservative strategy during the first part of the season to score consistent top 5 positions without taking too many risks on track. This worked well and kept us in lead or within few points from the championship lead until unfortunate technical failure in Trois-Rivieres. Since then for last two races I have been more aggress ive and pushed harder to close the gap to the lead back. I really needed this victory and I'm very happy to get it."

Niemela did not have long to celebrate his win, as he left early monday morning to Paul Ricard in France where he will test for the 2008 GP2 championship winning team Racing Engineering on Friday this week.

The final race of the 2008 Formula Atlantic season will take place in 2 weeks in Atlanta, Georgia.
