HOTCHKIS THIRD & HATTOR FOURTH IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING AT TROIS-RIVIERES

TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec (July 31, 1998) - Team KOOL Green Indy Light's drivers Mark Hotchkis and Naoki Hattori hold the third and fourth spots respectively after today's provisional qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix Player's de Trois-Rivieres.

The provisional pole belongs to Brazilian Cristiano da Matta who set the fastest time of the day, a 59.220 second lap, for an average speed of 92.462 mph. His Tasman Motorsports teammate, Airton Dare, turned the second fastest lap of the day, 59.667 seconds, an average of 91.769 mph.

Team Green Academy Class of '96/'97 graduates Jeff Shafer and Matt Sielsky are entered in this weekend's KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship race. In today's first round of qualifying, Shafer turned a fast lap of 1:02.843 (86.272 mph) to line up seventh on the provisional grid. Sielsky's fastest lap was a 1:04.171 (84.486 mph), and places him 14th after first round qualifying.

Kenny Wilden's lap of 1:02.176 (87.197 mph) set the pace in today's KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship provisional qualifying. Second fastest today was Anthony Lazzarro, with a lap of 1:02.404 (86.879 mph).

MARK HOTCHKIS, #26 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20 (PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship): Qualified 3rd with a lap of :59.780 = 91.595 mph

"We're getting there with the car. We have a few tenths to make up tomorrow. We'll work on getting better grip under braking which will give me more confidence in the corners. I can't say enough about the Team KOOL Green guys. They've worked really hard getting the car ready and making me comfortable. When the car is comfortable, it's easy to be fast."

NAOKI HATTORI, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20 (PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship): Qualified 4th with a lap of :59.848 = 91.492 mph

"The car is getting better, though I now have a little understeer in the mid-speed corners. It was also very hard to get a clear lap. But the track is getting better - it is cleaner now and has a lot more grip"

MATT SIELSKY, #16 LCI International Swift-Toyota (KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship): (Team Green Academy Class of '96/'97 graduate) Qualified 14th with a lap of 1:04.171 = 84.486 mph

"This is the first time at Trois-Rivieres for myself and my engineer so we're both having to learn the track. Right now we're guessing a little bit on the setup. Certainly we're not where we want to be just yet. I'm confident we'll keep creeping up on it, just like we did in Toronto. It would be nice to start the weekend fourth (Toronto finish) and work my up from there."

JEFF SHAFER, #24 PPI-Derek Daly Academy Swift-Toyota (KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship): (Team Green Academy Class of '96/'97 graduate) Qualified 7th with a lap of 1:02.843 = 86.272 mph

"The car is pretty comfortable. I've been out there learning the track and getting everything situated. Now we just need to fine tune it and then reel off some fast laps tomorrow. I've only raced on street circuits a couple of times and that was in F2000 last season. But I like them mainly because they aren't available for all the teams to come and test. So it's an advantage for a guy like me who isn't real familiar with the car and the track."
