The inaugural race of the Toyota Atlantic series 2002 will take place in Monterrey, México, during the weekend of the Tecate-Telmex Grand Prix at the Fundidora Park temporary circuit. This race will take place during the afternoon of saturday March 9th, was announced officially today in Monterrey. The race is the first of 12 in the Atlantic 2002 Championship, the main series in the CART ladder system, and several of the fastest drivers in the world have been discovered in the tracks of the Atlantic series, including Michael Andretti who is the only driver to have more victories than years of age in CART.

The Atlantic cars are completely new for this year, the chassis being a Swift 014.a which will make its official debut precisely at Fundidora. They carry a Toyota 1.6 liters, 4 cylinder engine, delivering over 240 bhp, using Yokohama racing rubber. Among the prominent teams in the series are: multichamps Lynx Racing, one of the few professional teams managed by women, which will run kartihg champ Michael Valiante; P-1 Racing with returning Jonathan Macri; World Speed Motorsports with Alex Figge; Rookie of the Year 2001 Joey Hand with the champs of 2000, DSTP Motorsports; Michael Shank Racing with Mexican contender Rodolfo Martínez Lavín and belgian Sepp Koster from the Barber series; the champs of Indy Lights, Dorricott Racing, with Mexican Luis `Chapulín' Díaz and Jon Fogarty; argentinian engineer Carlos Bóveda, appropriately named Condor Motorsports; the champs of 2001, Hylton Motorsports with rookie Ryan Hunter-Reay; plus new tteams such as mexicans from Scuadra Fortia and Dynamic Racing, Sigma Autosport, supported by their parent CART team of the same name, and others which should be announced soon.
