RICHARD SPÉNARD NAMED DIRECTOR OF CANADIAN OPERATIONS FOR SKIP BARBER RACING SCHOOL
(LAKEVILLE, Conn.) March 12, 2002 -Richard Spénard has been named Director of Canadian Operations for Skip Barber Racing School as operations expand into Canada this spring at the newly renovated Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Québec.
Spénard, one of Canada's foremost race drivers, has also been a top racing instructor in North America. In his racing career, which began in 1974, he perennially won Canadian championships, until the early 1990s. The Montreal native started his instructional career in 1980 in California, learning the ropes with driver Jacques Couture.
"There is a lot of depth and knowledge at Skip Barber and I'm very excited about being a part of bringing all that they offer to Canada. Going back to Mont Tremblant is like going back to my roots and just as my career grew from here I believe that Skip Barber will also grow in Canada, offering Canadians and Americans as well a very unique and memorable racing experience," said Spenard.
In 1985, Richard founded the Spénard-David Racing School at Shannonville, Ontario, with Ray David. His teaching methods, experience and ability to recognize raw talent and develop up-and-comers into future stars made his school one of the most sought-after in Canada. After spending several seasons as Driver Development Manager for Player's/Forsythe Racing in the CART series, Mr. Spénard is looking forward to heading this new operation.
"Richard is recognized in North America as not only being a great driver, but a business leader and coach in the industry. We are very fortunate to have him on the team as Skip Barber Racing expands into the Canadian market," said Aaron Hollander, President and CEO of Skip Barber Racing School.
The racing school at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant will be Skip Barber's first one outside the United States. Skip Barber opened his first school in 1975 after an accomplished racing career. He created a step-by-step curriculum of driving skill development and provided his students with professional coaching and expert feedback, enabling them to advance much more quickly than they could on their own. Some 25 years later, the Skip Barber Racing School has grown into the largest of its kind in the world.
The Skip Barber Racing School at Mont Tremblant will offer students several courses including Introduction to Racing, Three Day Racing Schools and Advanced Two-Day programs as well as custom tailored Corporate Programs.
Following extensive renovations to the historic track, Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant opened its doors last summer. The 4.26-kilometer track was rebuilt and upgraded to current FIA safety standards but retained the traditional character and ambiance of the original circuit. Among the renovations to Canada's second-oldest existing road course were an enlarged, paved paddock and a vastly improved pit lane. The track was widened to 11 meters and fully re-paved. A crossover between turn 6 and 10 enables the running of two separate racetrack activities.
Nestled in the splendor of the Laurentian Mountains and in the shadow of the majestic Mont-Tremblant, the Skip Barber Racing School offers students the unique ambiance of the magnificent Mont-Tremblant Resort only minutes away from the track. Mont-Tremblant is located 135 km northwest of Montréal and connected by an expressway.
