Jumbled Day in San Jose For Walker Racing
San Jose, CA (July 28, 2007)- It was a jumbled day of qualifying for Walker Racing drivers, Ryan Lewis (#15 NCPI Solutions/InSport) and Simona De Silvestro (#5 Miauton) who qualified thirteenth and fourteenth for tomorrow's Grand Prix of San Jose.
As history has proved itself for the past three years in San Jose the times are very close. Out of the 25 Champ Car Atlantic grid, nineteen of those entries were separated by less than a second in today's session and the Walker Racing duo was in the mix.
De Silvestro was the fourteenth fastest out there turning a time of 55.945 seconds (92.877 mph). The Swiss Miss made her first stint out on old tires and was on a fast lap, but unfortunately once the new tires came on, so did the red flag placing her fourteenth on the grid for tomorrow's race.
Finding himself in the same spot as his teammate, Lewis, had a similar story. After a phenomenal practice session, qualifying was a different ball game when the track started to grip up. When he made the change to new tires he struggled with under steer and then the red flag was called and the Englishman will start thirteenth after clocking a time of 55.932 seconds (92.877 mph).
The green flag drops tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. PT for the Grand Prix of San Jose. For more updates on the team please visit www.walkerracing.com.
What they had to say...
Simona De Silvestro: "I think in the beginning we struggled a little bit with the new tires. I think we put them on a little too late. Then on my fast lap somebody crashed and unfortunately they called a red. I don't think I was lucky, but the car felt great and the team did a really good job. I think we found the right car for the race and now we just need to stay consistent and move up tomorrow."
Ryan Lewis: "Today was similar to yesterday. We had good pace in the morning and when it came to qualifying it just didn't seem to come together, unfortunately. We thought we were going to be strong today and we weren't. Now we just have to fight our way up to the front."
Derrick Walker: "Simona just didn't get a clear lap in the end. We persevered with the car with the used tires and got it working really well. When we put new tires on and some idiot caused the red flag and we would have been P5 for sure. The car is good we just didn't get a break. When we put new tires on Ryan's car, he had too much under steer and unfortunately didn't get a clean lap before we flat spotted the tires, so it was downhill from there. Again we got bitten by the same bug and ran out of time at the end. A bit disappointing, because I think the cars are better than that, but we will see what we can do tomorrow."
